fun hand lettering!July 13th, 2010interestings and updatesJune 16th, 2010hey all. sometimes i just like to post things that are awesome on here.
you hear people talking about ‘ that rustic look ‘ all the time. it doesn’t get much cooler than these speakers (ffffound/source) as far as updates for artist/designer randall hadzor, that’s me. been working on a lot of research in various capacities in coding, especially to do with listservs and various applications for webdesign and communication, been maintaining websites, one where friend and client Matt Migonis is tearing it up in triathlon in the mid west breaking into the elite category and taking on the pro dudes. Congrats to matt for picking up his newest sponsor, Oakley. You can track his progress at www.migonis.com . There are some secret fine art / commercial fine art projects in the works also but I will have more information and actually be doing a survey of sorts with possible option for prizes! check back here, the book of faces, and www.varietystudios.com for more info on that in the reasonably near future. For more information check out btbathletics.com and mellovellobicycles.com for information on randall hadzor the endurance athlete. Dear Mr. LogoMay 20th, 2010Here is a question submitted from one of our viewers: “what do you think?……”
The article refers to the redesign of the Seattles Best coffee companies recent logo redesign, and here is my quick response: “There has been a ridiculous trend toward ‘clean’ sans serif type styles especially in branding lately… I think a lot of it has to do with how a mark is implemented.. I think the best big company redesigns are those that take into consideration the history of a mark and seek to improve them rather than completely disregard them… The Seattle’s Best was a very recognizable mark that wasn’t great but wasn’t bad either, it had a more traditional look and was probably a little clunky for modern usage such as web, small sized implementation, mass simplified production, (gradients and gold color 2 difficult things for printing, especially when simplified down to one color processes or just consistency of colors) I think the new logo jumped too far from the recognition that the company has created with their mark already, and it jumped into a pretty much trendy/clean aesthetic which makes it look super generic, which is not in the best interest if they are looking to remain familiar feeling with the coffee market.. The new mark is very sterile and not something I would be excited to see in the morning when I’m a little groggy.” longest bicycle ride ever.May 19th, 2010

I like to experiment with web work on rhadzor.com and btbathletics.com, (my personal site and the site i maintain for the group of athletes that I train with) this is the latest tune up. ^ Here’s the first look of the site, it has had many different faces since this: I like the new background, it seems cleaner than the ridiculous 3d argyle I got excited about a couple months ago:
Gotta do whatchyou do to keep bein’ who ya be! 27 in 28February 16th, 2010Last night I came home to a package, with the most beautiful packing tape I’d ever seen, safely leaning against my apartment door.
I should have taken some snaps of it.. In the 28 degree weather I donned some cycling shorts, old school performance tights, my darntough wool socks over my balega crews. 2 underarmours, the new house ind. jersey, then a hi viz yellow top over top to keep the new jersey clean but still know that i was wearing it ! ‘ tossed a couple hot hands hand warmers in my cycling shoes, put on a neck warmers, some snowboard goggles, helmet, a red l.e.d. blinky on my back for safety, some extra hand warmers, a gu, and my keys in my back pockets of the awesome new jersey, and out I went, up to otisco and back. It was magical, had to ride hard enough to keep warm then it got real hot. but it was good.

I was looking through my external hard drive again… I ended up wandering through past projects. I was intending to find an .ai file of a company logo I vectorized back in the day for use on our new jerseys for the Mello Velo / BTB Cycling Team. I came across a bunch of my first arts and designs, I thought it would be fun to share. hikeschool About 10th or 11th grade in highschool I decided I wanted to pursue some sort of design. I was very interested in industrial design because I was taking classes on CAD programs, 3d modeling, and learning to use CNC milling programs and equipment. So inherit to applying design school, I had to load up on art classes. Since junior year where I took college level calculus at La Fayette hs in conjunction with Syracuse University I had the math & engineering (in conjunction with Rochester Institute of Tech.. project lead the way classes) stuff underway… This is about when I consciously got into art to develop skills to be able to sketch out ideas and form. Pretty sure this was a grid based still life… I had some fun with the melting neon green and black grid look familiar? Acrylic painting in the style of David Hockney:
Still drawing with concentration on highlights:
college I ended up going to Monmouth University, down in Jersey. It was the best combination of decent art program, and division 1 athletics. I ended up doing graphic design and running track and cross country, which was awesome. Every time I visited the school it was sunny, a mile away from the ocean, 2 hrs from NYC… Seemed alright to me. So we did some basic design classes:
Typographic Self Portrait: We did tons of other projects but in addition to that I got an on campus job as the art lab assistant so besides keeping the printers and everything in working order and eventually becoming the on hand tutor, I got to use the programs and do numerous independent projects which were very fun. An illustration of my car entitled ‘the blackura’:
at this point it was a work in progress, until i realized i really liked the unfinished look… where after I developed it further I deleted those new layers to keep it like this. Cletus:
I did a series of photoshoppings of friends to capture their true selves. Included in the series was also the jolly green giant, the hamburglar… and a bunch of others I cannot recall. Perhaps I will unearth them at some point. Here is the source of this handsome project: freelance So after goofin’ around, enjoying design and arts, being in the art lab 70-90% of my life. I got my first freelance job, some lady was starting up a dog care company and was looking to employ some design student and it ended up being me, I made some sketches…
Over some conversation, we put them all together:
And put together my first freelance logo:
While I working on that I got some tips from one John Vigg on how to optimize the color process to make things easier for application in signage, printing, etc… Started to really learn about organization and keeping a nice clean file and did another little freelance vectorization for Vigg. From there I ended up working at the sign shop, learning more and more, doing more freelance, interning at some sweet firms, and now here we are… starting a cycling team and livin’ the dream… ok.. so back to looking for that .ai file. |
